Can anyone explain why he is the poster child for some conservatives right now? He calls himself a libertarian and has not been able to engage on issues beyond making goofy faces when liberals say some things. Is it just a reaction against what is considered intellectual discourse? I don't know.

The Broadcast Wasteland
Brief Intro )

To keep this post from growing into a dense essay, I think digital multicasting is the answer. We all know terrestrial broadcasting, and their networks. One thing the HDTV conversion did was create the capacity for digital subchannels. In the analog signal days that were like so several months ago, there would be a transmitting station that created a channel 4. But now, there's channel 4.1, 4.2, and so on.

Well, the MSM doesn't have enough content to fill it. These channels might have AccuWeather, and that's it, because they don't have the supply to fill it with. Well, we've seen a similar broadcast wasteland before, AM radio. We all know what happened. If you're like me, you've read a nauseating amount of columns detailing the rise of syndicated political talk radio. So let's jump ahead to the wilderness we see now.

I'll excerpt a recent peice from TV Week:

Do you watch any of the new local digital channels?

No, neither do I.

Welcome to television’s new wasteland of local digital multicasting. Now there are seven zillion more channels and still the same complaint, “all these channels and nothing to watch.” More accurately, there’s little worth watching on these new digital channels.

In June, local stations finally made the long talked about - more like ballyhooed - transition from analog to digital. Along with the transition, stations were allocated several digital channels where they could - I emphasize could - multicast different programs using the same spectrum space it takes for one analog channel. Simply explained, a local station, say one broadcasting on Channel 4, can also program channels 4.1., 4.2., 4.3. and 4.4. Suffice it to say, whatever digital magic makes it happen, it’s pretty cool. But pretty cool to a point.

Like the current real estate crisis of our “great recession,” there’s a lot of digital real estate available, and few buyers. No one group – or local broadcaster – has figured out how to program these channels and generate revenue, draw viewers and yes, make money. One broadcast consultant put it to me, “there’s a lot of talkin’ and not much doin’ with these channels.”

I could gush with giddiness over the absurdity of this "problem." Just like with conservative news/talk at the end of the Cold War, there's one crowd dismayed that there's no content to fill a vast desert, and there's another group bummed that they don't have anyone of their own culture breaking in.

I want in on it. I've been trying to learn all I can't about first-run syndication, how barter syndication works, and that whole business. I want to be a among the colonists that pioneer the place. I want to build everything. Anyone here recall Andrew Klaven's pinning to have a whole infrastructure to ourselves? We can't just make movies, because they'll receive nothing but derision from the establishment critics, and won't be featured on the establishment talk shows, or award ceremonies, and everything else. We have to build our own critical review infrastructure and talk shows and everything else, where it will be received.

I won't plug what I'm doing, but I'm stumbling blindly through learning how to do one part. What about you? Can I get anything beyond another condescending "good luck with that." Hello? Oh, and one last thing. Would anyone be interested in a community to talk just about that?

When states run out of your money.
This is what happens when states run out of your money.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In Arizona, the budget has grown so gloomy that lawmakers are considering mortgaging Capitol buildings. In Michigan, state officials dealing with the nation's highest unemployment rate are slashing spending on schools and health care.
(Emphasis mine.)

Aren't you glad your turned over your rights and responsibilities to the government?

I've been teaching a lot of 8th graders about the Constitution and Bill of Rights lately and I have to tell you even the most ill-informed of them still look like Constitutional scholars next to most members of Congress and the executive branch.

I was discussing Amendments 9 and 10 with students and of course, health care and whether it is a "right" like others found in the Constitution. I never revealed my own stances on this issue and was quite pleased that the vast majority of them, after discussing the issue and the intent of the Founders concluded that health care was not a right included in the Constitution and that if the people wanted it to be a right then it rested with the people or the states to make it so and if it was to be at the federal level (as a power delegated by the people) then the Constitution should be amended to reflect that.

All in favor of replacing the current Congress with this batch of 8th graders?

Continual Allah debate and debacle: bit of light at the end of the tunnel
There's been a bit of light at the end of the tunnel concerning the Christian right to use the word 'Allah' in their literature and services in Malaysia as a translation for the Greek word 'theos'.

The judicial review, which will be a landmark case, for whether the Catholic Herald ought to be banned for using the word 'Allah' has recently dropped eight intervening parties in the case. These eight intervening parties include seven Islamic councils.

It is rare for the courts to make a decision against the Islamic mainstream. This is a small light at the end of the tunnel.

Please keep us in prayer. Thank you.

Goodbye, sweet girl!

We had to put Aria down last night, sadly. She stopped eating last Thursday, and we admitted her to the hospital Friday night to see if they could help her. They gave her IV fluids and an appetite stimulant, and by Saturday, she was doing just fine. She ate Saturday morning and Saturday night. She ate Sunday morning, and then...nothing. I gave her the appetite stimulant again on Monday morning, and...nothing. She just would not eat.

Pure Speculation
Hello, recently I've been thinking about the basics about what we believe. How there isn't much to get upset about unless someone clearly falls outside the foundation of the Christian beliefs which seem to involve Jesus and salvation. The beginning and the end seem to paint a more vivid picture of what that means for us today, whether you take the creation story and the book of Revelations completely literally or not. The foundation of what we believe remains tested and true.

I have trouble creating solid opinions on many parts of scripture such as the beginning and the end, because I've heard so many good ideas as to what truth is and then another very good idea that contradicts it. I love the people who make both arguments, and one person's foundation in Christ seems to be just as solid as the other. So I have been trying to figure out what is truly important in life, and loving God and others is the simplest understanding to solve every speculation. Loving in action God and others and respecting oneself.

I'm wondering now what difference all these other opinions make in each one of us, other than revealing our individuality. Are there basic beliefs about creation or end times that flesh themselves out in everyday life? I think the easiest look might be the lifestyle differences between those such as Calvinist, Armenianist, and Open Theist. How these different view points reflect how we live our everyday lives. Whether the views reflect the heart of a Christian homosexual or the Christian man against such behavior.

If statistics can be turned into stereotypes, could there be a clear difference in the lifestyles of many, based purely on opinions about the grayest areas of theology? Afterwards can we work backwards based upon how people act, to what they believe, and figure out the truth? Mostly working on the principle that the fruit will determine the livlihood of the tree. Can we figure out certain gray areas in Biblical truth based on the way people live? Or is the viewpoint on how people live as gray as the most fought over scriptures?

We might then just be left with loving God and loving others and yourself. There are some truths that fall under love, faith, and hope, which can't be shaken, and are shown by God's word fleshed out in the way we live our lives, and these might be judged alone in ourselves first, before anyone else who calls themself Christian.

Predictions
1) Cao (the Republican (for now) Representative who voted for the slavery bill) will switch to the Democratic Party.

2) Democrats know that the economic/monetary shit will hit the fan and they only have a very short window to trick the people into approving massive new spending programs so they will attempt to festoon them with fake incentives like tax cuts ("targeted", of course) which never really kick-in. (Just like their promised "spending cuts" of the 80s and 90s.)

3) Barack Obama will approve a few more troops for Afghanistan while at the same time announcing to have "changed" the Bush era policies and even though he already has more troops deployed to the region that Bush ever did he will claim to have "reduced" American presence there. He will then cut a deal with Iran where Iran pretends to help with Afghanistan while Obama sells out Israel.

4) Obama will also pretend that 8 million jobs haven't been lost since he took office and will continue to claim that "lots" of jobs have been "saved or created" by his massive stimulus bill (which has both not really taken effect yet and already saved us).

5) Sarah Palin will hit #1 on the best seller chart and be invited on Oprah.

ETA: Sarah about her appearance on Oprah. Should I make this "again"? :D

6) Obama will attempt a "back door" attack on Fox News by attacking their licensing through the FCC and attempting to reinstate the "fairness" doctrine. (Similar to the way Clinton used the IRS to attack his enemies.)

7) The Democrats in Congress will pass (another) massive tax increase under the guise of "soaking the rich" and "reducing" the deficit.

8) The Democrats will use tragedies involving guns to attempt another ban on guns.

9) Obama will reduce the size of the US navy by mothballing boomers and fleet carriers.

10) US GDP growth will never exceed 4% annually until socialism (and slavery) are rolled back.

Speaking In Tongues

Yesterday a few friends and I got on the subject of speaking in tongues. This is something that I don't know much about, and in the past has generally been something that makes me uncomfortable when people do it in church (I've been told now that it is something you're supposed to do in your quiet time only, not in public because it can confuse others). While some things about it were put much more in the right perspective, I still have a lot of questions about it.

Is speaking in tongues something that anyone has the ability to do, or only if you happen to have that spiritual gift (speaking and hearing)?  When a person does speak in tongues, do they know what they are saying and able to control the words coming from them or does it just kind of rush out? Have you ever had any experience with it personally?

The problem with flat rates for health insurance.

The health insurance folks don't have much choice from under the governments guns. They will be forced to charge the same rates for the chronically sick and ill as they do for the healthy and well.

So the insurance company can raise their rates over all, reducing their market share due to charging more, but trying to cover increased payments by raising prices in the hope of bring in enough premium. The ever reducing market share reduces the amount of money to cover the payouts for treatment, there by increasing the need to raise rates, until they are bankrupt and charging a $1,000,000 a year premium to no one at all.

Or they can not raise rates as rapidly. They might gain some market share against the rapid rate raisers, but they are not operating in a vacuum nor as a monopoly, so their competitors will attempt the same thing. And their payouts for treating the chronically ill will out strip the income from flat premiums, just like the folks who tried rapidly raising rates. When they go out of business, they will perhaps leave more customers as law breakers than the rapid rate raisers, but they will still leave folks without federally mandated health insurance, open to fines and prosecution by the Federal Government.

This explains the Fed's insurance plan. It's expensive compared to todays rates only with regard to most groups of insured. When it's the only rate in available, backed up by the same trillions of Federal Dollars that the stimulus and bailouts are backed by, and it's illegal not to buy it, it won't matter what the 20 somethings think of it. It won't matter what the sick or the healthy, or anyone else think of it either.
